2024-25 Meetings

Formal UGG-NCR meetings for this season follows our traditional approach of being convened on the fourth Tuesday of each month, with the exception of December where there we will not be any meeting.  Meetings will also be suspended for the summer months of June, July and August. Start time is 7:30 PM (Eastern) unless otherwise noted.

Since the start of January 2020, the UGG-NCR’s formal monthly meetings have been delivered as on-line “Webinars” rather than in-person presentations / discussions.

  • German Immigration in the 18th and 19th Centuries to Western Ukraine (Galicia) and the Discovery of My Grandfather Kindraczuk’s German Ancestry: Part 1 by Dr. Romana M. Bahry Ph.D, Professor Emerita (York University)

In this presentation, Dr. Romana Bahry described the history of German immigration to Galicia (Halychyna) from the Middle Ages to the First World War.  Galicia became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 1770s and with this political annexation began the substantial movement of German and Austrian immigrants settling in Galicia. Dr. Bahry mentioned the various Austro-Hungarian proclamations that encouraged German settlement in Galicia. She also described published sources for the study of the German immigration movement including government directories and Galizien Village Family Books documenting the centers of German settlement. The German/Austrian influence in Galicia until 1918 extended to the fields of government and legal administration, education, medicine, and even language.

A video recording of Dr. Bahry’s Webinar presentation can be found here. We also have a recording of the Introductory and Q&A segments from that evening. Details on the sources of her information can be found here
