Administration

The Ukrainian Genealogy Group – National Capital Region (UGG-NCR) is a non-profit unregistered group that has no paid staff and is run entirely by dedicated volunteers.  Day-to-day management of the UGG-NCR is accomplished through an elected Board of Trustees who report (including the current financial position) to the membership through the “UGG-NCR Annual Report”.  We are proud that we have been able to evolve and provide our membership with relevant genealogical and family history information since our inception in September 1999, with funding coming solely from voluntary membership fees and donations.

2023-2024 UGG-NCR Board of Trustees

MOMRYK, Myron
UGG-NCR Board of Trustees Chair
Myron is one of the UGG-NCRs earliest members.  Being active with founder Ted Lomatski, it was a logical step for Myron to carry Ted’s vision and drive forward after Ted’s departure in 2003.  Beyond a doubt, Myron has been the UGG-NCR’s guiding light for more than 20 years.

Myron Momryk was raised in Oshawa, Ontario, and holds a BEd from Queen’s University, as well as a MA in Canadian History from the University of Waterloo (1972).  He is a retired Archivist from Library and Archives Canada, where he was responsible for acquiring and organising archival material from East European groups, and the Ukrainian-Canadian community in particular.

Myron is held in high regard by the Ukrainian-Canadian academic community and is the author of numerous articles and research publications, including “The Cold War in Val-d’Or — A History Of The Ukrainian Community in Val-d’Or, Quebec”, which he presented to the UGG-NCR in January 2021.   Myron continues to research and write in the area of Ukrainian-Canadian history.

DOWHAN, Mike
UGG-NCR Communications & Technology Manager
Although Mike makes Ottawa his home, he was born, raised and attended university in Montreal.  Mike is a retired Telecom Engineer and Project Manager who has long been interested in researching his family’s Ukrainian and European roots.  Through this hobby, he has gained much satisfaction discovering/preserving his family history, as well as meeting many known (and newly-discovered) relatives throughout his travels in Europe, North America, and South America.

Mike has been an active member of the UGG-NCR since its inception in 1999.  When the UGG-NCR’s founder, Ted Lomatski, moved to Atlantic Canada in September 2003, Mike was handed the mantle of the Group’s technical expert, publisher and member communications manager.   Mike’s contributions as Communications Manager often go unnoticed as he seamlessly handles his diverse roles in a diligent and highly professional manner.

FIKIS, Jerry
UGG-NCR Treasurer
Jerry’s interest in genealogy was sparked years ago following a conversation with his paternal grandmother.  His grandparents were part of the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants to Canada and originally settled in Alberta, north-east of Edmonton.

A Professional Engineer, Jerry has had a long career in the telecom industry, with a strong focus on software and computer systems architecture. He is the holder of several patents in this field.  This background lends itself well to assisting Mike Dowhan on various UGG-NCR technical tasks, including webinar development.

Jerry has been active with the UGG-NCR since 2006 and took over the role of Treasurer from Bud Buchinski in 2011.  As Treasurer, he produces the annual financial report and ensures that the Group’s fiduciary responsibilities to its membership are met.

KEYWAN, Zonia
UGG-NCR Member at Large
Zonia grew up in Edmonton, lived for many years in Montreal and now resides in Ottawa. She holds an M.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta.

A professional translator and member of the Quebec Order of Certified Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters,   Zonia has translated numerous books, articles and other documents from French to English and Ukrainian to English.  She is the author of two books on Ukrainian-Canadian history: Greater Than Kings:  Ukrainian Pioneer Settlement in Canada and A Turbulent Life:  Biography of Josaphat Jean, O.S.B.M.

Zonia has been a member of the UGG-NCR Board of Trustees since 2021.  She has a long-standing interest in history and genealogy and has presented her own family history to the UGG-NCR membership.
