German Immigration in the 18th and 19th Centuries to Western Ukraine (Galicia) and the Discovery of My Grandfather Kindraczuk’s German Ancestry: Part 2 by Dr. Romana M. Bahry Ph.D, Professor Emerita (York University)

In Part 2 of her presentation on German settlement in Galicia, Dr. Romana Bahry described her discovery of the German Protestant maternal ancestry of her grandfather, Dr. W.S Kindraczuk. This genealogical search forms a chapter of her book on Dr. Kindraczuk (1882 – 1969), a chemist and pioneer of probiotics. The pre-World War I Austro-Hungarian province of Galicia had a multi-ethnic population, including Poles, Ukrainians, Jews, Germans, Armenians and others. All the official metrical records (births/baptisms, marriages, deaths) were kept by parish churches, in various locations and using different languages. Some of the records are now in Poland, while others are found in Ukraine. This presentation can help family researchers navigate these sources of metrical and other records, many of which are now available online.
