Life and Art of Theodore Baran (1911 to 1995) by Slavco (Sterling) Demchinsky

This presentation discussed Theodore Baran’s life in Galicia (now Western Ukraine) during a time of great political turbulence and how his family eventually settled in Canada after the Second World War. Baran and his wife, Anna-Maria, went on to be significant contributors to the Ukrainian Catholic community. Baran’s iconography, decorating about 70 churches from the Pacific to the Atlantic, is unique among all Ukrainian-Canadian iconographers and Slavco delved into the elements of his style.

Sterling (Slavco) Demchinsky is an amateur iconologist and photographer whose photographs are held in Library and Archives Canada, the Archives of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipeg, and the Archives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. He has studied theology and iconography at St. Paul University in Ottawa where he lives.
